Caller name: Firefighters Support Alliance
Caller type: Scammer/Fraudster
Someone called this morning with a number I didn't recognize but that came from the Sacramento area. He said his name was Drew Foster with the Firefighters Support Alliance. He said he was seeking donations and that the "support levels" were $100, $50, and $35, and wanted to know how much he could put me down for. He'd only said one or two lines about something about how this oroganization helps firefighters deal with PTSD or something before getting right to asking me for money. He might have talked for about 10 seconds, if that, before asking for money.
I told him that I didn't give my credit card or other information over the phone. He said they mail their info but only needed to know how much I would commit to donating now. I told him $35, figuring that, if it were legit and they sent me their info, I could determine if I was going to donate something after reviewing it and looking them up online. Then he said, "Great. I'll just need you to talk to one of our representatives who can get your informtion. A few seconds later, a man with an Indian or other similar accent got on the phone and asked me for my zip code. I hate now that I gave it to him, but I did. Then he said he needed to ask for my personal information. That's when I ended the call.
There's no need for anyone to go to that length with them, though. From what I've seen and experienced myself, this isn't a legit organization, or at least the people who called me are not. They are scammers. Don't give them any details about yourself that they could possibly use to commit fraud against you. If an organization is legit, they won't do that kind of quick hard-sell and then hand you off to another stranger who is likely from some Dark Web scam office set up to steal money -- money that innocent people work hard for and that could go to real organizations that help people in need. It makes me sick to think that these kinds of people continue to operate and thrive. The most I can do is leave this message here and hope others are warned to help shut them down.
