Automated message that went to voicemail -- Claiming to be Verizon Wireless and said there was a status change on my account and to call them at the 877 number. They gave me a reference number as my own cell number. Well guess what... I work for Verizon and there is no such thing as what this scammer/fraudster is doing. There is nothing wrong with your account -- do not call these people back. They are trying to take your information from you. Reported to VZW and FCC.

Got the same automated VM message telling me it was from Verizon and that I needed to call 877-403-0835 immediately to discuss changes to my account - and the reference number they gave was my own cell phone number. After reading the comments here I did not call back.

Contacted Verizon using *611, they looked up the 800 number and verified that it's a number associated with bloomington college wherever that is. It is a scam A. to get you to pay them by placing the call. B. Cellphone Number clone. C. To created a database of phone numbers. D. Used in conjunction with a logic bomb to disrupt Verizon's users. E. College phone hacker. F. To integrate with the already capability to tap verizon phones which should not be an issue because most operate with a google product and google has made it clear that their products are not to be used for ease dropping.

Got this call right in the midst of 'cranking one off' to the latest Victoria's Secret catalog and on-line photos of Selena Gomez in a bikini on my iPad (I'm a multi-media multi-tasker like that). Talk about jackoffus-interruptus!!! Anyway, I listened to the voicemail, which was a s**y female robo-voice stating she was from Verizon and to call an 877 # and reference my cell phone number....something about a status change to my account. I did some quick research and found this site alluding to it being a scam, so didn't call the number back. I just blocked the caller on my phone, and went back to the 'task at hand' and had a wonderful climax.

DO NOT CALL BACK! DO NOT CALL BACK! DO NOT CALL BACK!
DO NOT CALL BACK! DO NOT CALL BACK!

I followed advice from people here on this thread, and called Verizon at the *661 number.
I JUST NOW got off the phone with a Verizon Rep who told me about it.
I received a call this morning from 336-308-2420--where an automated voice identified me by name, told me to call ANOTHER number, 877-403-0835 regarding a change to my account that must be addressed "Today!"
They had my name, and they gave me my own number as a "reference number."

The 336 number is actually that of Level 3 Communications in Asheboro, NC--but the Verizon rep assured me that Level 3 has no idea about this.

She said they receive many complaints every day about this happening, and they have a task force that is working on it. I gave her all of the info that I had on the numbers.

She said that it is a shadowy international group that if you DO call them at the 877 number and give them any information, they will then pass the info on--and charge international phone calls to your number.

I VERY MUCH appreciate people on here giving advice and info about this--so I thought I would pass on what I just found out. To give you an idea as to how long I had to wait on hold while I typed my earlier message on this thread, they answered the very moment that I posted--so it is really not all that long of a wait.

Good Luck with it and PLEASE DO NOT CALL THEM BACK! cALL *611 instead, and tell 'em what you experienced! They appreciate it.

Cheers!

Thank God I looked up this number on this site and realized this was a scam call. Instead of calling this number back, I called *611 as noted by another person on this site to reach Verizon. The message that was left on my phone said it was verizon and that there was an issue with my account. the reference number was my phone number. The incoming call number was listed as 312-651-4768. I talked to Verizon and they said it was a scam. Do not call back the 877 phone number. Go to Verizon directly.

This is legit, see the response from a Verizon representative.

https://community.verizonwireless.com/message/987474

This is just their automated billing system. It will call you if you are a few days past due. They leave the message about a status change because as a collection agency they are prohibited by law from leaving a message about financial information. Customer service will have no record of this call because their system only tracks calls from customer service, not the automated system.

Received a call from 551-226-5391 & didn't answer, since I didn't recognize the number. I got the same automated voice mail message (with mispronunciation of my first name), informing me of a status change to my account & asking to call 877-403-0835. I've gotten several of these calls in the past, from different numbers, & never call because a quick search reveals it's a scam. I called *611, talked to Verizon customer service, who verified there's been no activity on my account & no calls to me. The representative also offered to put the originating number on my blocked list, which I did. Of course the scammers have multiple numbers to make their calls, but at least 1 is blocked.

Bottom line: do NOT call this 877 number. If you're a Verizon customer, call them directly if you have questions.

Over the past 3 weeks I've gotten calls from 87 different numbers. That's not a typo, 87 numbers. I called Verizon directly and gave them the info from the voicemail and they verified that no changes had been made to my account. I turned over every single number as well. I got another call today and decided to call them back from my Sprint phone, just to see what they said. After being told that changes had been made to my account I told him what Verizon had said, and that I had given them all of the information about the numbers. He hung up.
