I got a text from an unknown number asking me to call back at this number. The number is definitely legit. Ms. Fugger asked me to clarify a date that was unclear on a fax the local SSA office had sent her. Nothing else.

I originally wrote this complaint and have since learned that this is a real social security agent. A real person that cares
and where have we seen that lately!

This is not a fraud. Save yourself the trouble of calling Social Security to verify (which was a 20 minute hold time). Someone calling from 1-617-227-1929 & wanting you to call back to 1-866-964-7317 with an extension number is NOT a fraud

He keeps calling offering a way to boost my wife's SS payments.

Nope.

Received email to call "Ms Fugger". Sounded fishy to me. Based on the answers to this site (for example the "need you to clarify a number on a fax") I think it is fraudulent. SSA would not send you email to confirm a callback and clarify a number -- no way! Let me guess -- that number was a birthday or ssn? I guarantee it was used to either confirm you were a gullible fool or specifically to steal your identity. Sling a reverse lookup on the number does not indicate SSA. Run, don't walk! Note the SSA phone system does ask to retort these to the inspector general, which you should do.

I got a letter and phone call, it went to voicemail. The letter is from Boston, MA. SS is located in CA. Also, black ink, I think they use blue ink, very un-official looking letter. Only signature is a small cursive Social Security Administration. Its a scam

Got a call from this number and checked with the real SS. They said ALL of their numbers start with 800, NOT 866. Further, they will not call you - you will receive a letter. DO NOT FALL FOR THIS!
