Caller name: GEAK SUPPORT
Caller type: Scammer/Fraudster
RANSOMWARE is a computer virus that Geak Support is attempting to use to rip people off, especially those who might be visiting p**n sites in particular. Click on the wrong photo and your pc will suddenly appear to be unusable until you call the number that's displayed on your monitor. Then you'll be connected to someone trying to pass themselves off as being from a legitimate company associated with Microsoft and they'll immediately interrogate you with an accusatory "WHAT WERE YOU DOING TO CAUSE YOUR COMPUTER TO LOCK UP, SIR?". Then after posing as the good guy who'll take care of your problem for you, they'll progressively become more obnoxious and start pushing hard for you to reveal your credit card information to them to "unlock" your computer. If that doesn't work, they'll try scare tactics in bullying you into submission. Don't fall for it, it's all [***].
My research has shown that "Geak Support" (not to be confused with the similarly-named Geek Support) tries to rip off unsuspecting callers to the tune of $400-$600 (US funds). BEWARE! This company is a total fraud and you're encouraged to contact the authorities should you ever have the misfortune of dealing with them.
From Wikipedia: "Ransomware is a type of malware that restricts access to the infected computer system in some way, and demands that the user pay a ransom to the malware operators to remove the restriction."
