Caller type: Scammer/Fraudster
On my personal cell phone I received a voice mail from (845)255-6322 (Arlington Heights, IL) telling me that I was subject to an IRS enforcement action, and directing me to call the IRS at (202)381-1834. I called the number and the person (male voice) who answered knew my full name and address, claimed he was an IRS employee, and proceeded to tell me that a warrant was out for my arrest because I supposedly cheated on my taxes. The person, who would not identify himself, told me that I could settle the issue by paying $7,000. He said that the IRS had attempted to deliver documents to my home unsuccessfully, and had left a notice in my mailbox to this effect. I asked how to retrieve the documents and he said they were "with the sheriff." I asked which sheriff and he put me on hold for a while. When he came back, he said that the documents were at the Arlington Heights sheriff's office. By now I was sure it was a scam and I asked him who he thought he was to harass people this way. He responded with profanity and hung up. I called the number several times more, speaking with different people who initially claimed to be with the IRS but then promptly hung up once I started challenging them. It is terrible that these people are trying to scare people with arrest as a means of extorting money.
