Received a call from this number a few times before, decided to answer it today. Supposedly from the U.S. Grant Department, a division of the U.S. Treasury, giving me $9,000 for being a good citizen, having no criminal record, and paying my taxes. She was hard to understand; the line was staticy and English was not her first language. Obviously a scam! People must fall for this, but its hard to believe. I sometimes like to string them along, which was easy to do. I figure the longer I can keep them on the line, the more annoying I can be to them and as long as they are talking with me, I'm putting a very small dent in their profit margin. Kept her on hold for about 20 minutes while I got my account number...yeah right!I Disconnected the call after the 20 minute hold, and she called right back. She said she'd give me a grant confirmation # and then a phone number to call back to so that I could verify...but not until I shared my information with her, specifically, my account information. Wouldn't give me my name and kept asking me to spell it for her. Eventually she did give me the phone number to call back to; not the same number she called from, and got upset when I still wouldn't give her any information. I called the number, actually while still on the phone with her, and she hung up. Spoke with a male, he wouldn't give me his name, said he was the "Senior Account Manager". I continued to refuse to give any information, which angered him. I told him to remove my name from his list and do not call me again. He said "okay", if I do something for him, and asked me to "kiss" him and threatened me, saying either I give him my information or "kiss" him, or he would not remove me from the call list and would infact harrass me, calling every minute of every day. I hung on the line a bit longer, he became more and more ridiculous, and I tried to record him but was unsuccessful.

BTW: That phone number "Mary" gave for the "Senior Account Manager" was 202-697-9658.

Same as comments above said I was eligible for a 9,000 dollar grant from the U.S. government and that my money is already in the Federal Reserve. They offered a Visa card and direct deposit to my checking account. I told them I didn't have it so she called me back but I found numerous complaints online so I didn't. She had a thick accent and there was a pause at the beginning. She said they chose me because I pay my bills but I am a freshman in high school and do not pay bills.

Have called EVERY day this week---men w/ heavy foreign accents---telling me I've won a grant from the govt. I tell them to quit calling to no avail, so I've started blowing a loud band director's Acme Thunderer whistle in their ear---even that doesn't stop them! Really annoying---what can I do?

Same as all these comments... I said how would you deposit money with my account number, that is to charge my card , you would need a routing number. He still kept reading the script. I said you can not deposit money with my 16 digit number on the front of my card. He said oh ok , well may I have your routing number. Like how many people really believe you will just up and receive free money. Nothing in life is free...

9/3/2014 (202) 210-0054 I just received the call from someone who said that he was from the government saying that I was awarded 9000 from the government and was explaining to me the whole thing about you being a good citizen paying bills on time and all of that good stuff, while I was calling the number and of course no answer and then a busy signal. He asked if I had a bank account I told them no a pre-paid credit card and I said no so he just hung up. He did have a hard accent and there was other people on the back ground. Why are they doing this? Can't someone stop them? What if someone does believe and give all their information? They need to be stopped. Please!!!

I've learned not to answer calls that: are unknown, out of state, anonymous, etc. Tried to call the # back and it won't even ring once. My Dad, (also a vet) got hooked by 1 of these scammers and it took us months, a couple of bank changes for him, changing his email address and changing his phone # to finally get them to stop. All I can say is if you don't know the number DON'T ANSWER!!! Let it go to voice mail.

called me just before lunch, a lady with a thick accent, saying I was one of 1200 randomly selected to win a grant of $9000 for simply paying my taxes on time, having a clean criminal record, etc, that could be used for anything legal. I often get calls to my cell that are actually meant for somebody else, so I asked the name of who she was trying to get a hold of, and she said she didn't have the name, that I would be forwarded to somebody from the department of the treasury but that she was simply verifying the phone number. I wanted more info so that I could look up more information and see if it's a scam, etc, so I let it keep going. She was then asking for any account, refillable card, etc for the money to be disbursed into, saying in half an hour it would be there. I told her I didn't have an account or any plastic, and she asked how I wanted the money. I asked for a number so I could call back after getting in touch with my college. She said she'd call me back, and asked when she could. I said I'd really prefer to call her back, because I didn't know how long it would take to get hold of the people I needed to. It then mysteriously disconnected. I got the information I needed, though; a search for "$9000 government grant" will give you plenty of scam reports, including the top hit from the Better Business Bureau- even though that's an article based out of a $7000 government grant scam from two years ago, its comments thread includes this one.

I just received the same call...from "Brian Anderson"...I highly doubt that was his name, although he swears that it is...he also gave me his badge i.d number in trying to convince me that he was not a scam. After I insisted that he was in fact a scam, he proceeded to get very defensive and upset that I would not listen to his spew and attempt to change my mind. I have also had an encounter with this scam in May of this year that I had forgotten about. I was in D.C. for a business trip and the housing-keeping attendant asked if I would listen to the caller, as she could not understand him due to his thick accent and that she was from Jamaica. He was asking for her bank info and was delivering the same scam. I HAVE REPORTED THIS CALLER AND NUMBER TO THE FTC, BUREAU OF CONSUMER PROTECTION.

Found that to stop these scammers it is best to simply block the number. The high dollar phones have apps that can block them or, as I did with my conventional phone used ATT "smart limits".

The first option was to provide routing and account number to either a checking or savings account. The second option was to put it on my credit /bank card. She said you could have these funds deposited a number of ways credit card, gift cards, debit cards etc. I had a hard time understanding what she was talking about. She kept saying she was going to give me some kind of number to redeem my money. Fortunately I was at my computer and searched loyalty grant and this website came up say it was a scam. Who the heck makes these kind of calls. Have received both on cellphone and land phone. I will not answer because I don't answer calls that I don't know who is calling. How do these people get my numbers?

Caller type: Scammer/Fraudster

I got that same call. The lady stated that I had been selected to receive $9000 because I was in good standing with the treasury department, had no debt and no criminal history in the last 6 months. She stated that every year the treasury department selects 2000 people to receive this money. wanted to know if I wanted to have this deposited in checking, saving, or on a credit card with a zero balance. I told her that I preferred that a check be sent and she told me they only did electronic transfers. When I told her that I did not feel comfortable with that she said thank you and hung up.

Man with thick Indian accept told me he worked for the US federal government, and several citizens were chosen to receive a grant for 9,000 dollars for being in good standing with the government. I asked if he had a website, he stuttered and kept repeating that as soon as this "screening" phone call was over he would put me through to another department. He said the grant money was already in a "federal reserve". Then i googled the number he was calling from, told him he was a scam, and he said "Anyways anyways anyways when this screening call is over..." and I hung up.

Call came in from a very foreign sounding woman, possibly indian, speaking with a weak grasp of the english language. She said that she was with the US government and that I had been randomly selected as a winner of a $9000 grant and gave me a list of things that I could use the money on (such as a new car). Then she gave a list of things that I can not use the money on (such as gambling). She then said that as 'public record' she needed to ask me what I was going to use the money on. I expressed my doubt and she began to tell me that it definitely was not a scam but as she was talking the phone cut off, meaning that there was probably someone else listening in that cut the call off for her. When I called back a while later I got the message : Message 2 switch 753.
