Caller name: SCAM ( said called from Telstra but he was not really)
Received call similar to below post
I received a phone call today (16/05/2017 at 2:00pm) from a person claiming to be a telstra technician. He informed me that my home broadband connection will be disconnected tomorrow unless I let him "fix" my computer. He claimed that my computer is downloading a lot of viruses without me knowing and if I don't fix it now my whole computer may become corrupt within the next couple of days.
From the beginning of the phone call I was very suspicious but went along with him anyway. He asked me to turn my computer on, so I did. He asked me to open Event Viewer and then show a list of application event logs. I was asked to open one of the logs, and he then asked if there was an option to delete to entry. There was no such option, to which he explained that there should be a delete button, and this was "proof" that my computer is under attack. He then asked me to go to the team viewer web site, at which point I refused to go any further. He told me he would transfer me to his supervisor, and then simply handed the phone to his supposed supervisor, who told me that I must go to the team viewer website and grant them remote access. I ended the call at that point by simply hanging up.
These people did not try to identify me when I answered the call, ie ask me to confirm my bigpond user name/account number/address etc. not even my name. When I asked them to confirm where they were calling from, they gave me an address in NSW, not the answer I was looking for. I was wanting them to confirm the department they were calling from, which I exclaimed, and he responded aggressively that he was a telstra technician and gave me an employee id number. These things, coupled with the fact that they requested remote access to my computer just seemed too dodgy to go along with.
Caller name: Sir Michael John from Telstra (pretending)
Another "computer viruses threat" scam, but this time I managed to get two more of their "headquarters" phone numbers.
In the opening sentence he told me he is from Telstra helping customers to eliminate pc virus threats. I asked his full name (Sir Michael John is what he called himself), his contact number (I could see the number he was calling from but he gave 02 7547 1634 as headquarter's number), and employee ID number (D008621, fake I'm sure).
When I insisted that I'm going to call Telstra to check out his story, he told me to call "Telstra headquarter number 03 901 9770" while he remain online. I hanged up and contacted Telstra scam report number which is 132200 and told them every details.
Although I'm an Optus customer, the actual Telstra guy was very polite and helpful.
She said Telstra had noticed malicious downloads on our home computer, I asked her how is this so as we don't have a home computer so she hung up.
I do the "I have no computer " all the time now , but going to invent something more engaging now . like after 3 minutes do the " I will give you to my daddy now" or " this is a recording plz leave message". should be fun.
I have heard of scams where they ask you to go to your computer and turn it on and then some how take over your computer, however it never happened to me until last week.
I had a call from an anonymous number, she said she was from Telstra and there was something wrong with my internet and if we didn't fix the problem now it would disconnect very soon.
Straight away i knew something was wrong, but i kept talking to them.
she handed the phone to her supervisor who than told me to press the window key and the R key at the same time.
I said i was doing as she asked but nothing was happening.
(i was really writing an email) she told me to do it 3 times until she figured out that i was wasting her time and she hung up on me.
