This number called me today and the recorded message advised me to "press 5" if I have not yet received my payment protection money or "press 9" if I have! I am not claiming anything from anyone so I guess this is a scam!
These parasites are the bane of modern living and we should be able to block numbers from all of our phones!

10:49 on unlisted, TPS registered number.

Answerphone is full with 42 silent calls - possibly them from a different number.

0012102490540 - appears as a US number, which means you would pay international rates to find out who they are.

As Colin says report it to ICO or OFCOM

Silent call - I could hear noise in the background, but they hung up after a few seconds. Although I'm registered with TPS, this number has called me on at least a dozen previous occasions when I've been out.
You know what to do - don't just grumble on sites like this, report it to the ICO so that the authorities can take take action!

Phones EVERY morning just after 10.00. Shame it will be a computer or they'd hear this answerphone message which gets VERY angry responses from 'live' cold-callers ... "... If this is a personal or family call for -------, you can leave us a message. But if you're squatting on your haunches in a sweaty call centre or boiler-room about to read your script, then go away and get a life. If you're one of those callers, you're a pointless, unwanted, anti-social, parasitic, opportunistic, money-grubbing, cold-calling pest. We NEVER pick up unless we recognise numbers on our display. Personal callers, however, can now leave a message. Thank you..."

.Rang my land line today but rang off when I answered. This was particularly annoying as I had had a restless night and was trying to catch up on some lost sleep. Why are the regulating bodies so impotent when it comes to stamping out nuisance calls?

People, don't call them back to see who they are, it just costs you money. I find it hard to believe a scammer can call you and cause your handset to dial them back automatically, I would love to see the technical details of how they could open the switch on your telephone remotely. If this were possible, why would a scammer do it? Think about who gets paid in this scenario.

TPS can't do anything if the tossers are outside the UK, they get enough mugs to go along with them to justify the cold calling abuse. BT can't do anything about it as they are simply the carrier and they don't know who the number is allocated to at the originating end, a scam number could be reallocated legitimately or the scammers may be spoofing the number anyway.

You have a few options:

1. Just hang up on them
2. String them along with total c**p. If they are surveying for sales leads then the people buying the leads will eventually stop using them if all the survey data collected is garbage.
3. Don't answer calls with the same number, I used CLID and put the numbers in my phone book as Scammer.
4. Invest in a caller blocking phone. The BT 6500 or 7510 seems to do the job quite well according to the reviews. Also the Panasonic KX-TG 8062. I am looking at these myself.

Hope this helps someone reading this list.

You can call your phone service provider and have international OUTGOING calls barred. this means if you answer this call you should not be charged.

Only good if you do not make international calls.

An Indian sounding man saying "This is Windows Technical Department. I am calling about your computer". I did not listen any further, just laughed loudly down the phone at him and hung up, which is what everybody should do. They will of course try to get you to give them remote access, and either lock you out and hold your computer to ransom, or install malware, spyware, add you to a botnet, or all of the above. Don't talk to them at all.

A lady with an accent - probably Chinese, insisted that she was going to close down my computer because I did not have a valid Windows licence. I said she was talking rubbish and hung up. I received three more calls each more threatening than the previous one accusing me of hangin up on her. She said she would report me to the police because she was an officer of Microsoft. I suggested that she did so and I would report her for harassing me. I did not get s 5th call.

Received 11 calls yesterday, eventually answered and it was a Glasgow window scrappage call centre, I asked to be taken off the database as I am registered with TPS the caller called me a stupid slapper and hung up. I received another call yesterday evening and my partner answered when he explained we weren't interested they hung up. Missed a call this afternoon but a message was left, I say message but it was just a couple of heavy breaths. This is really starting to scare me, does anyone know the name of this company? It is definitely a Glasgow call centre.

First started with silent call last week. Put phone down but received another next day. After a few seconds a recorded woman's voice came on advertising windows. Press 2 to call back, press 1 to be removed from calling list. As member of TPS shouldn't be on list anyway. I pressed 2 for call back as I wanted to find a company name. They called back tonight, in the guise of a boiler scrappage scheme knowing nothing about windows?!

I have reported them via the information commissioners website. https://ico.org.uk/Global/contact_us
